Benefits from Apprenticeship

  • MSDE gives an incentive of a 25% stipend, up to INR 1500 pm for each apprentice.

Apprenticeship training is a course of training in industry or establishment under an apprenticeship contract that includes basic training and on-the-job training (OJT)/practical training at the workplace.

All establishments with 30 or more employees (regular and contract) are required to implement Apprenticeship Programs ranging from 2.5%-15% of their workforce (including direct contractual employees)
• This is optional for establishments with a workforce of 4 to 29 people.
• Establishments with a workforce of three or fewer are not permitted to hire apprentices.

The National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) is a government of India initiative that provides financial assistance to establishments that offer apprenticeship training. On August 19, 2016, NAPS was launched.

To promote apprenticeship training in the country and to provide financial support to establishments to undertake apprenticeship programs

To engage apprentices under the NAPS, the government reimburses 25% of the paid stipend, up to a maximum of Rs. 1500/- per apprentice each month.
The basic training cost per trainee for a maximum of 500 hours is repaid to the Basic Training Provider contracted by Establishments (to be computed at Rs. 15/hour).
Establishments are exempt from EPF and ESI contributions for apprentices employed.
Companies that hire apprentices can also use their CSR contributions to pay “skill training.

Anyone who has completed 18 years, is a minimum of 10th class pass (for Optional Trade), meets the standard of physical fitness for the course, has the minimum educational qualification prescribed for a trade and have an Aadhaar number can pursue apprenticeship training.

According to the Apprenticeship Rules (as amended in 2019), an apprentice’s stipend shall be determined by his qualifications.
School pass-outs (class 10th) – 6000 per month
School pass-outs (class 12th) /National or State Certificate holder-7000 per month
8000 per month for technician apprentices/diploma holders
9000 per month for graduate/degree apprentices

The establishment and the relevant Sector Skill Council will conduct the assessment. The theoretical element of this assessment would be administered online by the relevant SSC and the practical portion would be administered on the shop floor by the employer and would be evidence-based. In such cases, apprentices who pass the evaluation conducted jointly by the establishment and the appropriate Sector Skill Council will be granted certificates.
